DON’T have KIDS, but STILL have DOG?

Maybe you or a family member struggles with your dog’s (mis)behavior. Perhaps, you just never got around to training, or let the training go to the wayside.  Both can limit the relationship with your dog, and cause chaos in the home (even between people!). As dog lovers, we often tolerate embarrassing or frustrating manners from our dogs because they mean well or are so darn cute. You don’t have to tolerate any longer.

The Canine Effect exists to help people and dogs influence each other to become better – better at listening, understanding, communicating, trusting, honoring differences, and loving.  We help humans improve their leadership, and help dogs learn manners and develop impulse control.

If you need help overcoming problem behaviors or want guidance in training new behaviors, call us for a free 20-minute consultation. We will listen to you and assess how to best proceed with our private, in-home training.

Training in the home and around your neighborhood are a great choice because:

  • Home and surrounding areas are where you spend most of your time together, so establishing good habits in those spaces is optimal
  • Working with your dog from home, to yard, to neighborhood, and beyond provides opportunities for familiar and appropriate stages of growth for your dog
  • In-home sessions provide more access to all or multiple family members, which sets your dog up for success through person-to-person consistency
  • The private nature of in-home sessions allows for a unique training plan to be discussed and implemented, and for all your questions and concerns to be addressed

We offer training for:

  • Puppy and New Dog set-up and training
  • Establishing important ‘House Rules’ for good manners
  • Basic obedience behaviors (sit, attention, down, come, place, stay, walking nicely on leash…)
  • Learning foundational engagement games and drills (the more engaged your dog is with you, the easier obedience will be)
  • Dogs that ‘don’t listen’
  • Counter surfing
  • Charging the door
  • Jumping on people
  • Shy and fearful dogs

Our Approach: Relationship and Rewards-based Training
Relationship is the heart of life for humans and dogs alike. It is what makes life meaningful, and is the driving force of The Canine Effect’s training philosophy. Relationship-based training centers on the relationship between a dog and his family/guardian as the foundation to life-long learning, psychological stability and emotional wellness. It is about respecting the canine in your dog, clear communication, and an empathetic perspective in order to give your dog a good deal and to create easier daily living for you.

In addition, Rewards-based training is effective and supports engagement and trust between you and your dog. Dogs learn quickly when they are honored for who they are (as a canine, a breed and an individual), when rewarded for good behavior, and when they receive feedback about mistakes (we first must know why a mistake was made – which we inquire about). Depending on the needs of your family system, we will help you learn specific tools and techniques needed to teach your dog how to best live in the human world. Your dog requires and deserves attention, intention, patience and clear feedback. We do this through:

  • Application of developmental training stages
  • A focus on handler body awareness and body language
  • Building behavior with shaping, luring, and spatial pressure
  • Verbal and/or sound markers for clear communication

This approach builds trust and cooperation, modifies problem behaviors, and makes ‘training’ more of a relational lifestyle one lives, rather than a temporary technique one uses. The Canine Effect believes that a trusting, respectful, and attentive relationship is the foundation upon which optimal learning occurs. We apply this concept with you, the human client, first in order to best support and empower YOUR leadership and training skills.
